My Web Designer has disappeared!
Not sure what to do if you find yourself uttering this dreaded phrase…
“My web designer has disappeared”
Well luckily for you, MidWeb has 19 years of experience to save you from distress. Our knowledge of how to rectify this situation means we can offer you valuable guidance in unexpected circumstances. Whether your website suddenly disappears or perhaps your web designer went out of business, fear not as MidWeb will be your silver lining.
The first indication that your Web designer may have gone out of business is when your website suddenly goes offline, leaving you unable to access it. This scenario often comes as a surprise to many of the clients we assist. However, there’s no need to panic as there are resolutions to this. To begin with, locating the hosting of your website is relatively straightforward. Even if your Web designer failed to disclose the hosting details, we have methods to uncover this information by “pinging” the URL, which provides us with the website’s IP address. You may be fortunate enough to regain control over your website by negotiating with the hosting company. Meaning that you can pay for the hosting services in return for your website being reinstated and live again. However, it isn’t always this straightforward as the hosting company may refuse assistance making recovery slightly more challenging.
In such cases, MidWeb will explore other options like retrieving a copy of it from the web archive. This platform preserves copies every few months meaning that there’s a good chance we could obtain a copy through this and host it on our servers. Depending on if we have access to your web address (domain name).
Where do I find my Domain name?
Over time, we have seen a shocking number of clients face issues with accessing their web addresses. This situation typically comes to our attention when we’re preparing to launch a new website or taking over hosting for a customer seeking better service. If you find yourself without the login credentials for your web address, there’s a simple way to check its ownership and registration status. Just enter “who is” in a Google search and click on any of the top results. By inputting your web address in the search bar of these websites, you can view the registration details held by Nominet, the governing body for all web addresses. Frequently, we encounter cases where the address is registered under the web designer’s name instead of the client’s. In such cases, Nominet proves to be a helpful resource for resolving the issue.

Hi There,
I have just read your article and this is exactly what has happened to me. My site just disapeared one day and i since found out the designer has gone bust. I managed to get the domain re-hosted but havent managed to track down the where abouts of my site, is this now lost in cyber space or been deleted or is there a chance that the thousands i invested can be found or at least salvaged in some way?
Hi Russell, thanks for your comment. It is highly likely that your site will have been backed up somewhere and can be recovered – its certainly worth a try. Find out who was hosting your site and get in touch with them. You may have to pay to get the back-up but it will be cheaper than a new site. If all else fails you should be able to find an archive of you site at https://archive.org/web/.
